Under the agreement, the partners will work together on analysis to better understand and ultimately combat fraudulent and low-integrity content. New technologies, challenges of scale, bad actors, and pressure on article costs are fueling an integrity crisis in scholarly publishing. Trust in publishers and the integrity of the scientific record itself are at stake. With a strategy to complement in-house technologies with the best emerging integrity solutions from the market in a single workflow, Morressier released Integrity Manager in May 2023. Mădălina Pop, Product Manager for research integrity at Morressier: “Scholarly publishers are waking up to the integrity crisis and our partnership with IWA Publishing is ultimately designed to equip the community in this fight. The aim of our analysis with IWA Publishing is to apply a range of innovative tools – from paper mill detection to identification of potentially manipulated images – and take action to ensure low-integrity content is identified early and at scale. What we learn from this analysis will ultimately benefit the broader research community as we are able to tune technology around well-understood indicators.” Arash Hejazi, Managing Director at IWA Publishing: “The transition of scholarly publishing from a journal-based ecosystem to an article-based model has forced publishers to aim to grow their article output. However, our models for quality control struggle to scale up and our current processes do not go far enough. We’re delighted to work on this project with Morressier to explore our technological approach to screening the research papers we receive for potential misconduct.
